CHAPTER EIGHT

Claire

The breeze blew the hair out of Claire’s face as she stepped outside on the back patio of her house. The sun was warm on her skin, but the air was a bit cool. She pulled her dressing gown tighter around herself.

She walked over to the table and chairs at the one end of the house. Ethan was already there reading the newspaper.

“Hello, Claire.” He smiled and put his newspaper down so he could get up and give her a peck on the cheek before seating her at the table across from him. “Did you sleep well?”

Gone was the angry and nasty brother she had dealt with the night before. It was almost as though he had never snarled at her at all.

“I did.” She picked up the tea pot and poured herself a cup before helping herself to some fruit and pastries.

Ethan picked up his newspaper again, shuffling through it back to where he had been for a moment before she could feel his eyes on her.

“Are you alright?” He asked.

Claire looked up and met his gaze.

“I’m fine.” She swallowed hard.

She hoped she didn’t look like she felt— a deer caught in the headlights.

“You are quiet this morning is all.”

“Ethan I just got up a few minutes ago. I never talk first thing in the morning anyways.”

Ethan studied her around the edge of his newspaper while she picked at her food pretending not to notice him.

“I just thought you were still bent out of shape after our talk last night.”

She looked up from her food. Just looking at Ethan’s face was making her skin crawl.

“Why do you think that?” She went back to her food.

“I don’t know you kind of stormed out of there and didn’t come home for a long time.”

“I didn’t storm out of there Ethan. You told me to leave. At least let’s keep things straight.” She could feel her anger starting to simmer.

What the hell was the point in him riling her back up. Or even discussing it at all. It wasn’t like he was going to apologize to her or anything. All he would do was try and justify his actions.

Just like her father did.

“Right. I was having a bad day Claire.” Ethan put his paper back down and moved some of the food spread out between them onto his plate.

And there it was. Bad days were a justification for everything in the Adams family. At least for the men.

“I understand.” She muttered and took a sip of her tea.

They ate in silence. Claire didn’t have much of an appetite, but she ate anyways knowing that if she didn’t that would only give Ethan more cause to keep pestering her with questions.

“You know I didn’t mean anything by it right?” Ethan pressed when they had finished.

“Ethan, just let it go.”

“No. I don’t want my baby sister upset with me because I was having a bad day.” His face darkened as he leaned forward to speak.

“It’s fine. I understand you were having a bad day.
